  Mahajanapada (Notes)

  • We know about the list of 16 states or Mahajanpadas from the Buddhist literature Anguttara Nnikaya of Suttapitaka, Mahavstu and jain literature Bhagavati Sutta.
  • Among the 16 Janapadas, 5 were more powerful than others.they were Magadha, Avanti, Kashi, Kosala and Vajji.
  • They are two types of state.

1) Monarchial states:- They were Anga, Avanti, Gandhara, Chedi, Kashi, Kosala, Sursena, Matsya, Magadh and Vatsa.

2) Republican states:- Kamboj, Kuru, Malla, Vajji, Panchala.

  • Asmaka was the Southen most Mahajanapada.
  • Location of Janapadas:-

North –West – 2 Janapadas

South India - 1 Janapada

North India – 13 Janapadas

  • Administration:- king(Raja), Vice-King (Upraja), Commander(Senapati) and treasurer(Bhandagarika).
